Brief History

Through cooperation with the Italian government, EMBL Monterotondo was founded in 1997 to promote internationalisation of the Italian research landscape. The Outstation opened its doors in 1999 and was led by Professor Klaus Rajewsky from 1999 to 2001.

Professor Nadia Rosenthal has been Head of the Outstation since 2001. It houses the Mouse Biology Unit, a basic research centre of excellence and innovation in mouse genetics and functional genomics. Recent initiatives in neurobiology and behaviour, regenerative biology and models of human disease reflect an emerging emphasis on systems biology and clinical applications.
