The EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) is a biennial pan-European meeting dedicated to scientific research and innovation. As part of Euroscience, ESOF brings together leading scientists, young researchers, schools, industry, innovators, policy makers, science and technology communicators and the general public from all over the world to discuss new discoveries, and debate about future directions of science, humanities and social sciences.
With its international and multidisciplinary approach, ESOF represents a major European science and technology event and a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between science and society.
In the 2010 edition, as in the tradition of ESOF, an important part of the event has been dedicated to outreach activities within the Science in the City programme. Spread across the city at prominent locations - squares, museums, cafes, theatres, streets - the programme is designed to attract scientists, schools and the public to exhibits, lectures and hands-on activities until well into the night.

As part of the programme, ELLS in collaboration with the Tara Oceans project presented

"One Quest, One Thousand Genomes:
A journey to explore the diversity of our planet"

The module had two main focus activities:

  • Targeted at secondary-school science teachers, the ELLS Workshop on Metagenomics explored the novel approaches to study organisms in a community.
Metagenomics involves the direct sequencing of genomes of a community of microorganisms inhabiting the same environment. Because it overcomes the limitation of growing microbes in pure cultures it is providing exciting new insights into the world of microorganisms.
Metagenomics research has potential applications in many different fields: human health, climatic change, renewable energy, and will impact the lifestyle and choices of generations.to come.
Through hands-on laboratory protocols and interactive multimedia tools, participants had the chance to analyse genome sequences present in different sample environments.

  • Presentation of Tara Oceans
On the 5th of September 2009 the boat Tara set sail with scientists from more than 12 research institutions on board, including EMBL, to explore the oceanic life and ecosystems across the globe.
Eric Karsenti, Project Director of Tara Oceans from EMBL Heidelberg, talked about this exceptional 3-year marine expedition, providing answers to climate issues and to deepen our knowledge on marine biodiversity.

ELLS activities at ESOF 2010 were part of a project called A Journey through the World of Biotechnology, developed in collaboration with Fondazione per le Biotecnologie, CusMiBio, the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali, and Parco Arte Vivente, exploring the implications of today’s advancements in biotechnology. A multimedia exhibit and hands-on activities specifically designed for students, teachers and the general public, took place at the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali, in the heart of the city of Turin.
