28th EMBL Alumni Association board meeting
On 27 January 2017, the Alumni Association board gathered at EMBL Monterotondo for their 28th Meeting followed by a tour and drinks reception with EMBL staff.
Key decisions made at the board meeting concerned the selection of the 2017 John Kendrew and Lennart Philipson Award winners, and next steps in the launch of an EMBL Alumni Volunteer Programme to harness the increasing number of alumni willing to support EMBL with their time and expertise.
Matthias Hentze, EMBL Director, presented an update of EMBL activities, which included the accession of Slovakia and Hungary to EMBL, the appointment of new EMBL Scientific Advisory Committee members, Elena Conti, Poul Nissen, Jan Löwe and Edith Heard, as well as next steps in hiring a Head for EMBL Barcelona.
Phil Avner, Head of EMBL Monterotondo, invited alumni to help strengthen the site’s support base with scientists and institutes throughout Italy. The Alumni Programme has been contributing to this with “EMBL in Italy” events. The next will take place at TIGEM, Naples and is open to all.
The next EMBL Alumni Association board meeting will take place on Friday 21 July 2017.
