The EMBL Corporate Partnership Programme (CPP) held its 8th Annual Meeting on 16 February 2017 at EMBL Heidelberg. EMBL Director General, Iain Mattaj, chaired the round-table discussion with Founder Partners Leica Microsystems and Olympus, sharing the Laboratory’s latest news and unveiling EMBL’s plans to focus more intensely on the area of neuroscience.

Head of EMBL Monterotondo, Phil Avner, revealed how EMBL Monterotondo, in the meantime renamed to be EMBL Rome, is to become the anchor point for EMBL’s diverse activities in the field of neurobiology with a particular emphasis on Neuroepigenetics.

Group leader Robert Prevedel gave an overview of EMBL’s recent achievements in imaging technology development specifically tailored for neurobiology while Christoph Müller, Head of Structural and Computational Biology Unit, joined by group Leaders Nassos Typas, Judith Zaugg and Theodore Alexandrov, gave an informative account of disease-related fundamental research at EMBL.

EMBL alumna Margarida Amaral, Professor of Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisboa, and Coordinator of BioISI research centre, provided a good example of how technologies developed at EMBL Core Facilities continue to support our alumni. At her lab in Lisbon Margarida is investigating molecular mechanisms that maybe helpful in developing drugs for patients affected by less common variants of cystic fibrosis.

During a vibrant networking reception held in the Advanced Training Centre’s (ATC) Roof Top Lounge, EMBL Director Matthias Hentze welcomed Sartorius to the family of EMBL Corporate Partners. Director General Iain Mattaj proceeded by expressing his gratitude to all the Corporate Partners for their annual contributions to the CPP that provide support to young scientists willing to attend meetings at the ATC. In 2016 EMBL and its corporate partners supported 328 fellowship recipients adding up to 1326 since the launch of the Programme in 2010.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, 22 February 2018 and we look forward to welcoming all EMBL Corporate Partners once more for the 9th edition of this event.
